The American Association of Retired persons found that pension plans' coverage is quite unstable, differing greatly based on ethnicity, age, pay grade, and education.

In addition, the AARP also found that social security benefits are becoming a problem in many countries, as the number of retired persons who receive benefits rise and the number of births fall.

As people who live in troubled economic times, some are not following government advice to save for retirement.

In my opinion the emotive words and euphemisms have not distorted the events or issues in any of the speeches because they were meant to clearly and forcefully show their audiences that war was the only solution for the injustice they incurred at the hands of the enemy. To me the most persuasive speech was given by Roosevelt because it illustrated the gravity of the decision America faced after suddenly being attacked by an enemy state. Both orators in some ways blame the hite Man for the destruction of his own peoples and remind the audience of the hite Man's seemingly unquenchable desire for more land and more power, at the expense of the Red Man. Currently there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the issue of the reinstatement of the draft in the United States. There are rumors and whispers rampantly floating through the media that are frightening the general public, while the officials who are actually in the know about the subject are categorically denying such intentions. In an article written just a few days ago the Coastal Post (with no byline) contends that a military and civilian draft is inevitable by spring 2005. One of the last bits of evidence offered by the unknown author is associated with the language of the proposed (and historically unsupported unpopular) legislation, "Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year...entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18 -- 26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." This is not a bill to reinstate a draft it is an unpopular and historically unsupported demand for compulsory military service. Voluntary service has been the popular stance since the Vietnam Era.

This work is obviously and inflammatory and unconvincing attempt at persuasion, written by someone who will remain anonymous. It dismisses the opposition by taking away its voice and clearly does not deal with counter evidence. The rhetorical appeals of the work are associated with highly emotional and trigger happy conspiracy theories, and unknown sources and experts. The article on a whole is not persuasive and despite its strong title it did not scare me at all.

The fundamentalists have played upon the "pathological distrust" of intellectuals that has been fostered in the hearts and minds many Muslims (309). Islamic intellectuals have done little to diffuse this distrust, but they must diffuse it, if Islam is to survive in a healthy fashion.
Intellectuals must show that democratic ideals are Islamic ideals, and this must be expressed in a way that is persuasive to everyday Muslims. Muslim dissident scholarship is growing, particularly in Egypt and Iran, in the language of the common populace, and this must be encouraged. If rational and pro-democratic voices of intellectuals do not quickly learn to speak in a more accessible fashion about economic privation and the political concerns that occupy the minds of ordinary Muslims living in Islamic nations, these intellectuals will lose any chance of gaining a platform in the community.

The Presidents accused of scandals in the history of American politics have been known to make memorable apology speeches. Even though, the speech that the Presidents made were done by different people and in different times, marked similarities and patterns have been noted. The Lewinsky scandal was basically a political sex scandal that occurred in 1999. This scandal came out because the President was accused of having a sexual relationship with an intern in the White House, Monica Lewinsky. The Watergate scandal occurred in 1970 because five men were caught at the Democratic National Committee and further investigations led to President Nixon being found guilty of committing fraud. Another fraud that highlighted a President as the causative agent was the Iran Arms and Contra Aid Controversy. Paul Keating's speech at edfern Park provides examples of rhetoric that are discussed below. The speech uses of and the three modes of persuasion: pathos, ethos, and logos. The use of epiphora, particularly in tricolon format, lends both cadence and emphasis. The word imagine is used in this manner and in epiphora convention, as the word is repeated in successive clauses. The connotation of the word confident is made more powerful by its proximity to the word imagine. Further, antithesis is threaded throughout by deliberate distinctions between non-Aboriginal and indigenous Australians, and presumably to use the favored terms of reference for every member of the audience -- as it is a political speech. The object of Obama's speech is to win the presidential nomination. His speech is persuasive. He is appealing to the populace of South Carolina (and to that end, he praises them and calls them "the good people of South Carolina").

Analyzing Obama's speech is interesting not so much because of the beauty of the speech -- it is indeed a work of art, poetic -- but also because it teaches us much about rhetoric. We see Aristotle's lesson through the subject and form -- through the craft -- of the speech.
